Kick Through Charleston: From a Lindy Charleston Basic take the front hand and with the back hand rotate her from the inside hip to kick the opposite direction with the inside leg and to pivot and kick front again. X kick Charleston from CP- Start with regular CP Charleston and get her hand & Left hip by 7- to make a 1/2 turn with a pivot to your right. Practice keeping the beat pulsing on the weighted foot while turning. After planting on ct 8 on the other side think kick turn (bend the knee) kick cross. Kick from a bent knee-keep it low- aim for the floor. Return to regularCharleston by dropping the front hand and pulling her in tight around the waist. A few styling tips for Triple Lindy dancing:

Do triple exercises emphasizing an anchored style. Weighted into the ground, knees bent.Feel the 1,2 rhythm of the music. Keep knees bent, weight forward, stay low. Stay on the balls of your feet.  Bounce with every count of music. Bouncing from the knees. When rocking backward, drive toes into the floor. Lindy is circular. Don`t raise hand too high when placing above follow Open the palm to gently help her turn. Make hand leads straight- don`t bounce the lead hand up & down or left & right. Look at your partner-it is a couple dance.  6ct Triple rhythm patterns- rock step triple 1 triple 2.  Lead start left foot, follows with right foot. 6ct triple basics CP-Forward look. 3 connection points-use them all-forces CP diamond shape. FOLLOWS** On most turns use pivot, step & Keep your elbow bent infront of you so you can see it. Stand tall & do not anticipate the lead

INTRO: This 6ct triple lesson is either for the total beginner or for the more advanced dancer who wishes to review the basics of swing dancing. The form of swing you will learn here is universal Lindy Hop and is meant to build a strong foundation which will allow you to get more specific later on. In this lesson we will cover the 6ct basic step in its various rhythms. We will also explain how the leader and the follower communicate by using connection and technique. They acquire these skills while learning the very basic but essential moves; such as the send out and the underarm turn.  First thing you need to learn is the basic 6 ct step. It just means that you are using 6 beats of the music. There are different forms of the basic 6ct. One of them is the single timing, the 2nd one is the double timing, The 3rd one is the triple timing. We will mainly cover here the single and then  triple timing. Thoughout the lesson we will be using Triple Timing. Keep in mind of course since you can dance sigle, double or triple timing- one of us could be dancing single timing while the other one is dancing triple. Thiswill not affect the other person as you do that so please allow yourself to dance with an advanced dancer when you are starting out so we are going t o demonstrate those 3 different forms of basic 6 ct. in CP:

 

The first one is single timing and we go slow slow quick quick. (Repeat that) Double timing looks like this: Tap step , Tap step,  Step step(Repeat) And triple timing is:

 

Triple step Triple Step Step ( Repeat) Now if you count it If you were to count the music it would go single: 12 34 56 (repeat) Double: 1 2 3 4 5 6 (repeat) Or again  Triple 1&2 3&4 5 6 (repeat) So it doesn`t really matter which step one partner is using or the other partner is using you can still dance together. So if the lead is dancing Single timing and the follow is dancing triple timing it could look like this: 12 34 56 12 34 56 So basically you need to know some kind of footwork to be able to move around. So the first one we will cover is the:

Single timing step –which is good to use for faster music. Follorers no matter what you always start with your R foot-Leaders you use exactly the opposite of the follow which is your L foot. First we are going to shift our weight forward and we are going to go step we are going to hold for a second beat-2 beats of the music. The 2nd step we are going to shift our weight back- and we are going to hld for a second best of the music. And we are going to do our step step.-which is also called a Rock Step/ and we go again Step Step RS add a little boince to it-S S RS. That is Forward Back Back Step or Sl Sl Qu Qu  So that is your basic Single timing Step. So now lets learn the triple step:

Triple step: Ladies you always start with your Right foot. Leaders you always start with your L.foot Triple is 3 steps to 2 beats of the music. Ladies you are going to go RLR Leaders you are going to go LRL exactly the opposite from the follower. Now pick up your knees while you are doing this-and you are going to go : triple step- so now your weight should be on the oiposite foot. So now we are going to start a second triple step with the other foot. Now ladies withyour left and leads with your R foot and we go triple step- Those 2 triples are replacing  the 2 single steps we were doing previously.and let us repeat this-TS TS –now we are still missing our RS –our step step –Ladies with your R slightly back-leaders with your L you are going to go slightly back you are going to do 2 steps-step step-so that is your whole basic 6 ct with triples.

Repeat again TS TS SS- Repeat While you do your basic TS and your basic just in general you want to have a little motion forward and back. Why? We explain later. Again: Weight forward and back we are going to go Triple forward Triple bsack Step Step Go forward Go back and Step Step Reopeat- When you do this try to pick up your knees-make sure that you actually shift your weight-at the end of your triple step from 1 leg to the other-otherwise you may find yourself doing stutter step and you are not going to be sureyou may as welll make a mistake than not be sure where your at-make sure you pick up those knees so you know the Foot is off the floor. Another little detail about the triple step-think that your rhythm is 3 steps in 2 beats of the music. They are not all even steps-think of it as 1 uh 2/ 3uh 4 /5,6 (clap the beat)

So thast is going to be your triple timing 6ct basic

 

CLOSED POSITION

When you start dancing with a partner we usually start dancing in closed position. –So we are going to study our CP. We are going to give you a lot of details- a little bit technical-but that is essential to communicate between a lead and a follow. A leader gives the follow signals- Follower picks up on the signals and then –responds so to do that we need to hace some kind of connection. We are going to talk a lot about connection in this lesson. First we are both going to bring our arms up to waist level. Like Barbie and Ken.

Ladies turn your hands down palms toward the floor  /Ken palms up/ now we turn to face each other-right now we are parallel to each othr-our feet are on the same 2 lines. What we want for a CP is feet off centre/ Ladies you are going to move slightly left- So leaders what we see is her shoulder lines up with your sternum bone –So ladies as a result your R foot should be inbetween his feet and leaders your R foot should be in between her feet Now if we walk toward each other- a little bit still parallel – the leader is still not connecting with me- for him to connect with me he needs to twist a little bit to his L: as he twists his forearm will be touching her rib cage, -try to be higher than lower on the rib cage. hand on the back.

His hand level on Her back depends on her height.. If she is a very short follower- his hand will be high on the rib cage if she is a tall follower and the lead is shorterthe hand is loer on vthe back-it is always a question of adjusting to the height of your partner. Follows L arm-you want to have the weight of your L arm touching his arm. So just let your arm drop down-just leave all its weight down and then from your elblow up-lift your forearm and your hand will just be resting wherever it goes. Try not to move your elbow-go from low to high-may be good for other dances-the space created is lost energy-this is where we do not have a connection. So we like to be connected behind the back, and somewhere around the tricep-Her R hand stays waist level. His L hand turns toward her- up and in like what`s up.  When a follow sees a hand upit is always an invitation for her to put my hand on top so let it on top and just relax it and leave the weight down..  Leader if you want to have the correct position you will turn your hand in and the follower will just place her hand on top. Relax the hand -Follows be ready to start dancing with your R foot so your weight is on your L-Leders opposite. –Now you are in CP and you are ready to practice your basic-Single or Triple Timing. So we eithergo S S QQ repeat- or we can do triple step –TS TS RS  Some leaders may start on the RS – so wait to feel the lead shift her whether forward or back first so thanks to this connection you will know so leaders make sure you either take her forward to start on the triple step or back if you are used to start on the RS. We will start on the triple.We like to start on the triple to get a for the movement first. Follow wait to see how the lead will shift your weight-so she feels him go and she doesn`t initiate—the wrong way to do it would be be if the follow just moves on her own. without Feeling the pressure on her rib cage. If she waits just a little bit and stays slightly behind she will feel how he shifts her – fell the pressure on her triceps-Ladies make sure you are a little bit behind him-that is why the off centre position is very important-if you are ahead of himyu are not going to feel his lead- so make sure you are back-behind-. 

OPEN POSITION

Most Common HOLD in open is Ladies with your R hand and leads with your L hand so you will have a lot of moves where you will end up in open position-clear we are far away from each other- Arms connect at a casual bend. Her hand on top. The Hold: In open position our hands are in the middle between the 2 of us-you don`t want the hand to be too close to the follow or lead-make it an even distance. The hands-Ladies create a little bridge with the R hand.-Lead do the same thing-only sideways.-For leaders most of the pressure of the follows hand will be on  2 fingers either the top 2 or middle 2  If it is the middle 2-you take your index out it looks like a pin ball grip-for pistol grip: ladies just rest it on top and you will be able to slide –so there will be some motion-from the wristbut maintain this bridge position. –you never lose the grip-. Leads do not press the thumb a very bad idea-the thumb lays down-just resting normally when followers donot hook well and do this –it gives the leaders the tendencyto hold tight so ladies make sure you hook*-Not too hard-Leaders make sure you do not press. Now to create tension-or Compression –Tension is going away from each other, It is like we are holding each other-Compression is pressing against each other It is our body weight going towards the hand. So follow presses into the palm-so tension-compression – so this is  gradual –you are not going to push or pull –do a gradual compression and  gradual tension. Mostly using tension in this lesson

THE SEND OUT

We are going to start from an OP and then we are going to go back to a CP:

DEMO-

CP-OP  OP-CP:  Tr Tr send her out Tr Tr back together. Tr Tr RS. So we are going to learn 2 different things-Leaders have to learn learn signals in order to tell your follower so she understands what you want. . Follows learn how to respond to those signals. You need to read them and then respond. So to simplify we are going to imagine leaders are an imaginary door- and only one person can go thru it and I am going to sendher out there and I am going to justguide her and say -ma`am table number 2 and I``ll be right there. So I just go and when I reach the end –he brings her right back in. and she just moves right back in. It looks just like this- We move out and we move in. Ladies pay attention-when he moves me out I keep moving away from him until I connect here at the hand again.-this hand is what stops me--do not allow the arm to extend or straighten I always keep it bent- so we call that when you extend your arm-.-Spagetti whip lash. Notso good we also do not want a  robotic movement-not tense-find something inbetween.. The way to think about is is when we take our RS after we finish our 2 triples- you want to think that your body is moving away from your elbow-sand the arm has some tension to it-RS

Timing:

Signal on Rock Step All moves generally start on RS. Tr Tr Rock Send/ TR TR Rock in repeat-so now that you walk thru the motion-you sent herout lsadies- you went out and you came back in. now we have to do it with the steps but before we do it with the steps we need to talk about timing-leaders you give your signal on the rs-followers when you go out do not go too far too fast-you need to rsation all your steps. –make sure that by the rs which is going to be the beginning o the move you do not extend your arm-s—so make sure you leave a little room to be able to take a rs.-like so-otherwise you will find yourselfvery far and not being able to take a rs-now the arm does not get very loose- if it does we call that spagettiwhip lash-and it does this- Think of taking your body away from the elbow so it has a little bit of tension-now notice the follow comes in she comes all the way with her body not with her hand reaching for his shoulder. –that is the last thing you wnt to touch-m this first thing you wantto fell is her rib cage when she comes in.  Follow-In-Rib cage on lead forearm and then put your arm on his. Follows remember to keep moving until you connect—keep moving but ration your steps

 

Footwork:

Follows your basic motion is forward and back on your triple steps-that isctually what you are doing whenever you are doing a move-sendout looks like this- TS Rock –He sends me-I go oon my Triple-Triple step-Then I go back because I am looking at him-and I go TS-and I go back to my RS-RS Forward on the triple and a little bit back on the second triple- so we always find we go forward and bsack. Leads notice that when I send her she doen`t open her body all the way-Like So:-That ould be something else-What leads are going to do is make sure her boy is parallel to his as I send her out-In OP follows try to know where he is trying to send you-look at his shoulders-they will tell you where he is trying to send you-I do not know where he is trying to send me I am just going to follow-RS TS TS –as you go out just svquare yourself off-RS TS TS RS-So keep looking at each other-and that is your basic send out. Triple 2x send her out/ tr 2x back together. Leaders learn the signals so follows understand what you want. Girls have to read and respond to the signals. Imaginary door –only one person goes thru-send her out there and back again-when she goes out –keep casual bend-do not stretch arm too straight. Called spaghetti whip lash-as she goes out she reaches the end of her arm and goes back in again.

UNDERARM TURN:

Next step will be the underarm turn and it looks like this: Demo RS TR TR 12 3&4 5&6 RS Turns are very important in swing. You do a lot of them: they travel, they stay in place-There are many different kinds. Right now we are using traveling turns. For now we are going to have the follows go underneath and ladies this is going to be a turn to your left-so you are going to be turning left. So my signal leads is I open my body: so Ladies this is a visual signal-anytime he clears the way you are invited to travel.  So the leader turns and he opens the gate and the follower will just go thru.-I would just go thru-right?

I am also going to give her a physical signal-Ladies you get stopped. You come from somewhere so whenever he stops you it is to change your direction so you are moving forward again.. It is like an elastic band.You are getting a visual signal and you are getting a physical signal. You need to keep moving.  How do you know you are going underarm? Simply because the hand goes up-now when the hand goes up it is still in the middle-she could be going or he could be going- it depends where the hand goes up. If it goes on top of my head I will be the one turning-if it goes on top of his head –he will be the one turning. So for now ladies you are going to go- So leaders you are going too clear the way-bring the hand up- -Ladies you walk thru your hand ends up on top of your head – you keep moving thru-and ladies you want to end up looking at your leader. Ladies you want to look at your leader as you keep traveling otherwise you are going to strangle yourself. You want to keep turning to look at your partner. Lets review it again: As the follower is coming in just before you feel tension on your fingers- because this would stop me- you will look at your wrist. As if you need to see what time it is and then it comes down and then you exchange places. So that little movement of the wrist from the leader allows the follower to slide around his  fingers- so you are going to be sliding around his fingers. So imagine that those 2 fingers are a gun And I am John Wayne and I am shooting to my right.(JW is blind) and the follower is coming in, and as soon as I see her coming in I will turn my wrist -because JW wonders what time it is and then exchange places. If we do it again on this side-the hand goes up-I keep moving and he faces me. Followers if you notice, I am always traveling down my line- the leader clears out and he comes back in. –he clears out he comes back in-.If you see it from a back view: I see him clearing the way- I just move thru and he comes right back in. Again-he clears the way I walk thru and he comes right back in. So this is the movement. Now we need to do it with the footwork

 

Footwork:

Again we are going to talk about timing. The timing is going to be the same as for the send out. So the Rock Step is the beginning of your move. We start with the RS this time as we did for the basic send out. So the RS is the beginning of your move. We are going to start actually on the RS. So we will go Rock Step-Ladies move forward on the first triple/triple step/ back on the second triple/triple step and back to your rock step. Rock step, triple step, triple step, rock step. Now why are we not hitting each other-we basically both turn a quarter turn. Because we dance- when we dance swing on two tracks. Track # one and track #2. Now when we come in and the follower turns we share the tracks (slot). I am standing on one track and she is standing on the other and then we pass each other and we face each other again. Now that we have gone thru the motion of the timing lets make it a little more specific. Lets break down the

Follow footwork:

Follows you start with your R foot. Remember in open position you start with your RS; not with the triple step it is just the common use. -because the RS is the beginning of the move. So ladies with your R foot you are going to take your RS back. Rock-you are going to come forward on the step-your weight is shifting forward. The leader cleared your way so you are going to keep going forward but your arm is coming up-so you are going to go under and you are going triple step-In the meantime I took a quarter turn because of my arm- second quarter turn I look at my leader-triple step-and as I stepe away- my arm is coming down and I finish with my rock step and I keep moving again triple ¼ turn, triple step and RS. So basically-you keep moving down the slot and you will eventually turn-just think about moving do not think so much about the rotation.

Lead footwork:

We start like the follows did with the RS-what we are going to make sure is: that when we do the rock step- Is that we already clear the way. Already when I take my RS it will be at a slight diagonal. We are going to go R and then make sure that you turn on step and then triple step which is a quarter turn. And then another quarter turn- I do not have to travel a lot just a little bit. Again: clear the way, and open triple step triple step.  And clear and turn  a quarter turn, a quarter turn. RS and that is the footwork for the leader. So together it would look like this: RS Tr step Tr step. RS a quarter turn, a quarter turn. Clear the way, tr st tr st RS. Now from this angle we talked about one more thing-we talked about this arm coming down-it only comes down because we step away. Lead don`t try to bring it down. So this would be the no-no: demo Rs tr down tr step-this would be a bad idea. Arm-It goes down because she travels back.-you basically want to make it nice and easy.

 

Underarm for the Leaders:

The arm still goes up; He still clears the way. He is going to X my right hand side so he steps out slightly to his L. But this time he is the one going under so he goes under his own hand. The funny thing is that we call this an under arm turn but in reality we are going under our hand- demo Together it looks like-RS triple step-triple step. Rs triple step Tr step RS. If you notice the time is exactly the same-RS we connect Triple step we move forward-second triple step we movea little  backward. So lets review the handwork- Leaders when you want to go under bring the fingers toward the ceiling-it creates a little pole and she is going to turn around it-followers-as he is going thru-keep looking at him-I keep looking at him-keep looking at him-keep looking at him- now why is this like that- If I don`t keep looking at him this is what happens-he goes nunder- and I keep going and my arm is being pulled back –this is what we call breaking frame-any time your arm is there-that’s a bad idea- everytime your arm is too far forward- that’s a bad idea.So keep your shoulder at a certain angle don`t allow it o go too far back 

and don’t allow it to go too far forward. If you just think about keep looking at him-it will prevent you from doing that. So again with the footwork-RS triple step triple step-RS again RS Tr s Trs RS. One last little detail-Anytime the arms come up for an underarm keep them bent the same way they are here up and down. Up Down.

Review: Footwork for the leaders:

What we are going to do is a quarter turn to the left and then another quarter turn to the left RS. Out of her way, L turn. What we are doing is creating a V-Out Clear the way and then we are going back in the slot again. All the follower will do is walk straight. Again we go RS and go out and in and RS. These are 2 quarter turns to the left- From the back it looks like this- Rock-Out-Triple turn/ triple step/ RS

RS TS TS RS. Rock –Out-Triple step Triple step RS.

Footwork for the Follows:

Followers- anytime he clears the way you know you got to go so leaders it is essential that you clear the way if you want your girl to stay in  place and then you want her to travel- if she gets used to travel around you all the time- you won`t be able to keep her in place. So ladies he has gone out of the way-you are still doing your RS you are still going forward. But this timeyou are not turning to your L-That R hand is staying to your R- so you look at him do not break your frame-triple step you ook at your partner- so you are turning to your right-then I do again my triple step going backwards and again my RS. R step he goes underI keep moving straight forward-0triple step I turn a quarter to my right to look t him-and then Triple step back to my RSback.

A FEW TIPS:

When we do this leader underarm makesure that we don`t bring the hand up too late-leaders have a tendency to bring the hand up on three and then it is too late-the follower is traveling under. Leads start bringing your arm up on 2 –If you count your RS 1, 2 That would be your 2. So you go 1-UP(2) and get well to the side so she knows it is a lead underarm, no way is it an underarm for the follow-Tr S Tr S RS. If you keep the hand more in the middle-this could happen where we both want to go under-and it is possible-but you want to be able to control that. AGAIN: Rock out/ clear out of the way-Rock Out Triple Triple-RS Make sure leaders on the hand level that you don`t hold with you thumb-because it wont allow her to turn around the fingers. Ladies remember to create yiour hand bridge and slide around.

REVIEW

Every time we get back into CP it allows you leaders to kind of think of hat you want to do next-It gives you a little break in your dancing. So you have learned the Basic Send Out from CP , The Follower Underarm Turn & The Leader Underarm Turn. Then you got back together-CP We start in CP: We start with the triple step/ triple step send her out. Triple step triple step- underarm turn-where she goes and we can do another one where she goes again- triple step now the leader is going to go under. Out triple step Triple step RS –One more time for the leader and we get back together TS TS RS. Demo from looking forward in CP: From this angle- TS TS  RS/ TS TS RS/ She Goes: TS TS RS (clear the way) TR TR RS and He Goes: TS TS RS  TSTS RS. And back together: TS TS RS.

#1 6ct triple time basic in Jockey position (Lindy Basic) “Diamond” Stance, 
connection between elbows, and do your triples on the spot-save the big rock 
steps for initiating moves. In CP the hand on the back is your strongest lead 
connection.

#2 Underarm to open: Frame and connection exercises. Pay attention to lead & 

follow-body lead from the arm on follow`s back. Girls 1st triple on the underarm is small small big 

moving into your own arm

#3 Follower underarm, Under Arm Turn: Practice moving together as a couple 
squaring off with the shoulders and hips. Be able to do a clean underarm turn looking at her as he 
goes under. Lead pattern is rock, X ,triple 1 (with a 1/2 paddle turn to the right) triple 2 in place. 
Make her do all the travelling. You stay in one spot. From OP think -stretch /go- for rock step. Get connection to make 
your dancing look elastic. SMOOTH! Underarm Turn: From open after a send out or 
tuck turn lead the follow with your left hand to your right side and past you.  
First step is a stretch (no rockstep for the follow though…just step on the spot) then the lead brings her in on two and 
she passes by during the triple-lead will anchor and begin the  follow’s turn at the end of the first triple. 
Follows don’t turn too early-keep an eye on your right hand and it will prevent you from turning too early.
#4 Leader underarm 
#5 Underarm to CP-hand on back by 3. Stay in place and bring her to you. 
#6 Throw Out /Send-Out – Lead does a forward rock-step leaving the follow back and 
then leads her through on two with the right hand (mainly) and the girl will start turning at the end of the first 
triple because the lead leads it then.
Try not to turn abruptly but stretch it out. Leads anchor your triples.

  • #1 Basic Swingout from Open Position: Basic timing 8ct: Practise in place 
  • 1 2 3&4 5 6 7&8

Start in Open position: her R hand resting in his left hand.

Follows: get ready setting up the 8ct on ct 8 on the left foot. 

Twist ct1 and ct2, move forward on ct2 when he leads you forward. 

Both get half way around on 3&4. By ct 4 be in an open style closed position.  

Follows travel as in run run run on 3&4. (X&X) Side step ct 5 then pivot & big 

step back on ct6. 7&8: L hook behind, 1/4 left turn with RL to set up the swivels. 

Leads: Get low on the rock ct1 with a good stretch, then cross ct2 leading her 

forward and bringing her to you! ; 3& get out of her way; ct4 face her, 

shoulders squared and L hand at the L hip. (3&4: side X side)

Hook behind on ct5 while twisting the upper body to turn her and change her 

momentum and release end of ct5 to go back and open infront of her ct 6 following her out with the left hand.

#3 Follower underarm, Under Arm Turn: Practice moving 
together as a couple squaring off with the shoulders and 
hips. Be able to do a clean underarm turn looking at her as 
she goes under. Lead pattern is rock, X ,triple 1
(with a 1/2 paddle turn to the right) triple 2 in place.  
Make her do all the travelling. You stay in one spot. From 
OP think -stretch /go- for rock step. Get connection to make 
your dancing look elastic. SMOOTH! Underarm Turn: From
open after a send out or tuck turn lead the follow with your
 left hand to your right side and past you.  First step is a 
stretch (no rockstep for the follow though…just step
on the spot) then the lead brings her in on two and she 
passes by during the triple-lead will anchor and begin the 
follow’s turn at the end of the first triple. Follows don’t turn 
too early-keep an eye on your right hand and it will prevent 
you from turning too early.
#4 Leader underarm 
#5 Underarm to CP-hand on back by 3. Stay in place and 
bring her to you. 
#6 Throw Out /Send-Out – Lead does a forward rock-step 
leaving the follow back and then leads her through on two 
with the right hand (mainly) and the girl will start turning

Try not to turn abruptly but stretch it out. Leads anchor 
your triples.
