LEAD AND FOLLOW ROLES:
Lead and follow roles are essential to the art social swing dancing with a partner. Social dancing is improvisational: the leader decides on the moves that they should perform together, and communicates that to the follower visually and physically through their connection. As the dancers become more experienced, this wordless communication becomes more subconscious, eventually making connection between the dancers easy and natural.

Visual leads:
However, the leader does not directly control every movement that the follower makes. The dancers share a common vocabulary of moves, and the leader needs to show visually only enough for the follower to recognize which element of the vocabulary is intended. Moreover, the lead only controls the larger aspects of the dance (where the dancers are standing, which direction they are moving in), leaving the follower with freedom to decide on her own styling or footwork variations.

Physical leads
Physical Leads are performed with the entire body using a pulse to the music while transferring weight as well as using an arm connection. With the arms and hands: Leads are indicated using the point of connection between the dancers. In open position, this connection point is the hand hold that joins the dancers. In closed positions, the leader's right arm holds like a bar around the follower's back, allowing for a more direct lead—he can indicate which foot the follower's weight should be on by transferring the body weight from side to side.

Beginner PARTNER CONNECTION Tips for dancing Lindy Hop Swing
THE PULSE
Main connection with your partner is getting on the same beat together with a 1, 2 pulse. Start on count 1, the upbeat. Pulse on every beat, on count 2, the down beat. Think 1,2 1,2 do get on beat together. Transferring body weight from side to side helps to get on the beat together and on the proper foot for basics.

THE HANDS
The hands are the main point of connection between Lindy Hop dancers in open position, and it is partly through this connection that the lead and follow aspect of the dance is communicated.

At beginner level, as long as the leader can communicate his intentions and as long as the dancers keep hold of each other, it's usually better to provide more instruction for the  larger aspects of the dance. However, even during the beginning stages of learning the dance, it is important that the partners work on getting the right connection with the hands.

In Closed Position: The traditional hand clasp is sufficient.

In Open Position:
The handhold with the follower's fingers curled around the leader's fingers, is enough to lead any of the moves in Lindy Hop (excepting lifts and drops). The leader doesn't normally need to use his thumb to grip, and the follower should not grip too tightly with her fingers.

Left to Right. The leader holds his left hand out with the thumb on top and the fingers bent to point right. The little finger of the lead can be folded into the palm. The follower holds her hand with the palm cupped down and with her fingers curled down around the leader's fingers. Most of the time, the leader should not need to hold on with his thumb.

The dancers' arms should be slightly tensed and springy, rather than stiff or floppy. The follower should also try to match the level of tension in the leader's arm. When his arm is tighter, he can lead a spin and the follower will get some momentum for the spin from the lead—if her arm were loose, then the lead would just flick her arm around and not her whole body. When the leader's arm is loose or relaxed, the follower's arm should also be loose or relax.
